Rosia Poieni Mine in Alba, was the largest surface mine in Romania, producing approximately 8.51 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) and primarily produced copper (27.58 thousand tonnes) in 2021. The Rosia Poieni Mine is owned by Government of Romania. The second largest surface mine with an estimated 3.63 mmtpa of ROM, was the Rosia Mine located in Gorj. The Rosia Mine is owned by Complexul Energetic Oltenia SA.
Tismana Coal Mine located in Gorj was the third-largest mine, the Rosiuta Mine located in Gorj was the fourth-largest mine, and the Bucharest Mine located in Ilfov was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 3.56 mmtpa, 3.43 mmtpa and 2.76 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. The Tismana Coal Mine is owned by Complexul Energetic Oltenia SA, the Rosiuta Mine is owned by Complexul Energetic Oltenia SA and the Bucharest Mine is owned by Metanef Group.
The five largest surface mines, i.e., Rosia Poieni Mine, Rosia Mine, Tismana Coal Mine, Rosiuta Mine, and Bucharest Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 21.89 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
