Spain: Five Largest Mines in 2021

  • Riotinto Copper Project in Huelva, was the largest mine in Spain, producing approximately 9.21 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) and primarily produced copper (21.78 thousand tonnes) in 2021. The Riotinto Copper Project is owned by Atalaya Mining Plc, and is due to operate until 2033. The second largest mine with approximately 3.91 mmtpa of ROM and primarily producing copper (70.85 thousand tonnes), was the MATSA Mine located in Huelva. The MATSA Mine is owned by Sandfire Resources Ltd, and is due to operate until 2039.

  • Cabanasses Mine located in Barcelona was the third-largest mine, the Oviedo Mine located in Asturias was the fourth-largest mine, and the Aristaria Limestone Quarry located in Valencia was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 3.12 mmtpa, 2.32 mmtpa and 1.87 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. The Cabanasses Mine is owned by Israel Corporation Ltd which is due to operate until 2041, the Oviedo Mine is owned by Antracitas Gaiztarro S.A. and the Aristaria Limestone Quarry is owned by Aristaria S.L.

  • The five largest mines, i.e., Riotinto Copper Project, MATSA Mine, Cabanasses Mine, Oviedo Mine, and Aristaria Limestone Quarry, cumulatively produced approximately 20.43 mmtpa of ROM in 2021
