MATSA Mine in Huelva, was the largest underground mine in Spain, producing approximately 3.91 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) and primarily produced copper (70.85 thousand tonnes) in 2021. The MATSA Mine is owned by Sandfire Resources Ltd, and is due to operate until 2039. The second largest underground mine with an estimated 3.12 mmtpa of ROM, was the Cabanasses Mine located in Barcelona. The Cabanasses Mine is owned by Israel Corporation Ltd, and is due to operate until 2041.
El Valle-Boinas Carles Mine located in Asturias was the third-largest mine, the Leon Coal Mine located in Leon was the fourth-largest mine, and the Villarrubia de Santiago Mine located in Toledo was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 1 mmtpa, 0.88 mmtpa and 0.28 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. The El Valle-Boinas Carles Mine is owned by Orvana Minerals Corp which is due to operate until 2023, the Leon Coal Mine is owned by Antracitas del Bierzo S.A. and the Villarrubia de Santiago Mine is owned by Grupo Samca.
The five largest underground mines, i.e., MATSA Mine, Cabanasses Mine, El Valle-Boinas Carles Mine, Leon Coal Mine, and Villarrubia de Santiago Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 9.2 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
