Glensanda Quarry in Argyll, was the largest surface mine in United Kingdom, producing approximately 8.27 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Glensanda Quarry is owned by Aggregate Industries US Inc. The second largest surface mine with an estimated 7.53 mmtpa of ROM, was the Whatley Quarry located in England. The Whatley Quarry is owned by HeidelbergCement AG.
Torr Works Quarry located in Somerset was the third-largest mine, the Cliffe Hill Quarry located in England was the fourth-largest mine, and the Mountsorrel Quarry located in Leicestershire was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 4.45 mmtpa, 4.26 mmtpa and 3.52 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. The Torr Works Quarry is owned by Aggregate Industries UK, Ltd. which is due to operate until 2042, the Cliffe Hill Quarry is owned by Midland Quarry Products Ltd and the Mountsorrel Quarry is owned by Holcim Ltd which is due to operate until 2041.
The five largest surface mines, i.e., Glensanda Quarry, Whatley Quarry, Torr Works Quarry, Cliffe Hill Quarry, and Mountsorrel Quarry, cumulatively produced approximately 28.02 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
