Morenci Mine in Arizona, was the largest surface copper-producing mine in United States, producing approximately 397.5 thousand tonnes of copper and an estimated 169.45 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Morenci Mine is owned by Freeport-McMoRan Inc, and is due to operate until 2044. The second largest surface copper-producing mine with an estimated production of 159.4 thousand tonnes of copper and approximately 39.89 mmtpa of ROM, was the Kennecott Copper Project located in Utah. The Kennecott Copper Project is owned by Rio Tinto, and is due to operate until 2032.
Safford Mine located in Arizona was the third-largest mine, the Sierrita Mine located in Arizona was the fourth-largest mine, and the Bagdad Mine located in Arizona was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated copper production of 120.2 thousand tonnes, 85.7 thousand tonnes and 83.5 thousand tonnes, respectively, in 2021. The Safford Mine, the Sierrita Mine and the Bagdad Mine had an estimated ROM production of 39.87 mmtpa, 34.07 mmtpa and 33.27 mmtpa respectively. The Safford Mine is owned by Freeport-McMoRan Incwhich is due to operate until 2053, the Sierrita Mine is owned by Freeport-McMoRan Inc which is due to operate until 2080 and the Bagdad Mine is owned by Freeport-McMoRan Inc which is due to operate until 2101.
The five largest copper mines, i.e., Morenci Mine, Kennecott Copper Project, Safford Mine, Sierrita Mine, and Bagdad Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 846.3 thousand tonnes of copper, 316.55 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
