Sentinel Copper Mine in North-Western, was the largest mine in Zambia, producing approximately 59.5 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) and primarily produced copper (248.7 thousand tonnes) in 2021. The Sentinel Copper Mine is owned by First Quantum Minerals Ltd, and is due to operate until 2035. The second largest mine with approximately 33.91 mmtpa of ROM and primarily producing copper (218.22 thousand tonnes), was the Kansanshi Mine located in North-Western. The Kansanshi Mine is owned by First Quantum Minerals Ltd;ZCCM Investment Holdings Plc, and is due to operate until 2044.
Lumwana Copper Mine located in North-Western was the third-largest mine, the Nchanga Copper Mine located in Copperbelt was the fourth-largest mine, and the Mopani Mine located in Copperbelt was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 30.47 mmtpa, 9.8 mmtpa and 5.08 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. Primarily, the Lumwana Copper Mine produced approximately 99 thousand tonnes of copper, the Nchanga Copper Mine produced approximately 11 thousand tonnes of copper and the Mopani Mine produced approximately 88 thousand tonnes of copper in the year 2021. The Lumwana Copper Mine is owned by Barrick Gold Corp which is due to operate until 2049, the Nchanga Copper Mine is owned by Vedanta Resources Ltd;ZCCM Investment Holdings Plc which is due to operate until 2025 and the Mopani Mine is owned by ZCCM Investment Holdings Plc which is due to operate until 2046.
