Lubambe Mine in Copperbelt, was the largest underground mine in Zambia, producing approximately 1.47 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) and primarily produced copper (38.98 thousand tonnes) in 2021. The Lubambe Mine is owned by EMR Capital Group;ZCCM Investment Holdings Plc, and is due to operate until 2041. The second largest underground mine with an estimated 1.3 mmtpa of ROM and primarily producing copper (34.52 thousand tonnes), was the Konkola Copper Mine located in Copperbelt. The Konkola Copper Mine is owned by ZCCM Investment Holdings Plc;Vedanta Resources Ltd, and is due to operate until 2044.
Chambishi West Mine located in Copperbelt was the third-largest mine, the Baluba Center Mine located in Copperbelt was the fourth-largest mine, and the Munali Mine located in Lusaka was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 1.22 mmtpa, 1.06 mmtpa and 1 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. Primarily, the Chambishi West Mine produced approximately 21.27 thousand tonnes of copper, the Baluba Center Mine produced approximately 8.34 thousand tonnes of copper, and the Munali Mine produced approximately 4 thousand tonnes of nickel in the year 2021. The Chambishi West Mine is owned by China Nonferrous Mining Corporation Ltd;ZCCM Investment Holdings Plc which is due to operate until 2038, the Baluba Center Mine is owned by China Nonferrous Mining Corporation Ltd;ZCCM Investment Holdings Plc which is due to operate until 2026 and the Munali Mine is owned by Consolidated Nickel Mines Ltd which is due to operate until 2026.
The five largest underground mines, i.e., Lubambe Mine, Konkola Copper Mine, Chambishi West Mine, Baluba Center Mine, and Munali Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 6.04 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
