An increasing population and economic growth are expected to positively influence electricity consumption in Australia. Consumption increased at a low-single digit CAGR between 2000 and 2020. The power consumption in the country is driven by commercial and residential sector. The power consumption in the country has remained at almost the same level except a slight decline in 2020 owing to the spread of COVID-19 pandemic leading to slowdown of economic activities in the country.

In 2020, commercial sector has the dominant share in power consumption. This was followed by residential and industrial sectors.

Power consumption is the net electricity consumed by the end users by excluding losses and own consumption and after adjusting exports and imports in a calendar year (fiscal year in some cases). The unit is represented in Gigawatt hours (GWh) and the scope is limited to historic period.

Impact of COVID-19

Compared to other country, the power sector in Australia was able to contain the negative impact of the spread of pandemic. However, almost the regions in the country observed a demand reduction. Victoria, Queensland, South Australia observed the major demand reductions whereas in Tasmania, and South Australia demand reduction was very less. As per AEMO, operational demand reduced across the NEM, with the largest reductions being observed in Queensland and New South Wales as these regions experiencing the biggest uptake of rooftop PV.
