Nickel production in Australia
Australia nickel reserves
According to the USGS, Australia had the world’s largest nickel reserves held at a significant position out of the global total. In Australia, nickel is found in mafic-ultramafic igneous rocks and is abundant in the states of Western Australia, South Australia, and Northern Territory. Some of the largest nickel deposits are found in Archean komatiitic rocks in Yilgarn Craton, Western Australia, with a significant amount of occurrences in the Archean layered mafic-ultramafic intrusions, as well as the Pilbara Craton, Halls Creek and Musgrave orogenic zones. The Yilgarn Craton of Western Australia also hosts a substantial amount of laterite nickel deposits.
Nickel production
Australia’s nickel mine production fell by a significant share, owing to lower ore grades at Glencore plc’s Murrin Murrin Mine This, however, was partially counterbalanced by an increase in production at BHP Billiton’s Nickel West operations, higher ore grade at Mount Keith mine, commencement of both Leinster, and Nova mines.
Factors Affecting the Demand for Nickel
Demand from China’s Steel Industry
China is the largest export market for Australia, which accounted for majority of the total nickel ores and concentrates exported from the country. The majority of the nickel in China will be used in the production of stainless steel, which on an average will account for a significant position of the total nickel consumed in the country. The remaining will be consumed for electro plating, batteries and for alloys and casting.
