South Africa has well-developed infrastructure and robust financial and legal systems. It has a republican form of government, in which the public hold the power to elect representative leaders or other representatives. It is a member of international organizations such as the United Nations, the G20 and the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG).
South Africa has been following a conservative fiscal policy to control inflation and attain a budget surplus. It saw regular growth until 2008, when power demand outstripped supply for the first time because of the rapid industrialization and mass-electrification program carried out in the previous decade. The government responded with a plan to build new power plants and import power from neighboring countries. However, a lack of available installed capacity means that it could still suffer another power crisis like the one seen in 2008.
South Africa has huge indigenous coal reserves and is one of the world’s leading coal exporters. It is not very much dependent on imports, and a significant share of its energy demand is met through coal. However, this makes it a leading carbon-emitter.
From 2003 to 2020, South Africa has been a net exporter of electricity. South Africa’s net electricity exports to neighboring countries have grown steadily since 2000. In 2000, South Africa imported more electricity than it exported. In 2020, the country imported less electricity than it exported.
Supply Security
South Africa was a net exporter of electricity in 2020. This is due to decline in power demand because of slowing economy. Also, generation has fallen due to the need for frequent unplanned power plant maintenance. As a result, the net exports have declined between 2019 and 2020.
