Carrefour is one of the leading food retailers in the world and is spread across 40 countries worldwide, and operates directly in 9 integrated countries, Europe (France, Spain, Italy, Belgium, Poland, and Romania), Latin America (Brazil and Argentina), and Taiwan. France, Spain, and Brazil account for 77% of consolidated gross sales. In FY2021, it added 846 stores bringing the store count to 13,894 globally.
At the end of FY2021, the group operated with a total of 13,894 stores under its banners in over 40 countries. Carrefour had 5,799 stores in France, 5,906 stores in Europe (Excl. France), 1,153 stores in Latin America, 348 stores in Asia, and 688 stores in other regions.
In France, Carrefour had 5,799 stores under its banners in FY2021, which include 253 hypermarkets, 1,043 supermarkets, 4,330 convenience stores (operating under the Carrefour City, Carrefour Contact, Carrefour Express, Bio c’ Bon stores, etc.), 147 Promocash cash & carry outlets and 26 soft discount stores (Supeco). In Metropolitan France, the proportion of franchised stores within the network represented 22.2% for hypermarkets, 71.8% for supermarkets, and 96.4% for convenience stores. The net sales were up by 3.4% YoY.
In Europe (excluding France), Carrefour had 5,906 stores in FY2021. These include 457 hypermarkets, 1,926 supermarkets, 3,430 convenience stores, 12 cash & carry stores, and 81 soft discount stores (Supeco). Carrefour operates stores in five integrated countries: Belgium, Spain, Italy, Poland, and Romania. At the end of FY2021, the group had 792 stores in Belgium, 1,474 stores in Spain, 1,489 stores in Italy, 955 stores in Poland, 365 stores in Romania, and 831 stores in other regions of Europe. Net sales in Europe were up by 0.6% at constant exchange rates in FY2021 YoY.
In Latin America, Carrefour is expanding its banners in two markets: Argentina and Brazil. In FY2021, the network comprises 1,153 units, including 184 hypermarkets, 151 supermarkets, 558 convenience stores, 259 cash & carry stores, and 1 soft discount store (Supeco). In FY2020, Carrefour announced the acquisition of 25 Makro stores in Brazil. In FY2021, three additional stores were acquired, bringing the total to 28 acquired stores at end of FY2021. Net sales in Latin America in FY2021, were up by 14.5% at constant exchange rates YoY.
Carrefour operates in Taiwan and Uzbekistan through franchising. At the end of FY2021, the Group had a total of 348 stores, including 70 hypermarkets, 4 supermarkets, and 274 convenience stores. Net sales in the Asia region, representing the operations of Carrefour Taiwan and taking into account the disposal of the Carrefour China business in FY2019, came to EUR2.5 billion, which is an increase of 16.9% at constant exchange rates YoY.
Apart from the French overseas departments and territories, Europe, Asia, and Latin America, Carrefour operates through 688 stores with franchisee partners in other regions in the world like the Middle East, Maghreb, West Africa, Dominican Republic, Mauritius, Madagascar, etc.
