The company also believes its innovative healthcare model increases access to quality care, delivers better health outcomes, and lowers overall healthcare costs. The company operates under four reportable segments Health Care Benefits, Pharmacy Services, Retail/LTC, and Corporate/Other. In FY2021, the company had a total of 9,939 stores across all locations.

As of FY2021, the Retail/LTC segment operated with approximately 8,075 retail stores with net selling space of around 79.8 million square feet and approximately 1,865 retail pharmacies within retail chains, as well as approximately 80 clinics in Target Corporation stores. During the year the company added 58 new stores and closed 81 stores bringing the total count to 9,939 stores.

On July 1, 2019, Onofre, the company's Brazilian subsidiary, was divested for a relatively small amount. As part of its Retail/LTC segment, Onofre operated 50 retail pharmacies.

Also on December 3, 2017, the company entered into a definitive merger agreement to acquire all of the outstanding shares of Aetna for a combination of cash and stock. The merger was closed in FY2018.

On November 30, 2017, the company acquired Wellpartner, Inc a provider of specialty pharmacy services that provides products and services under the Section 340B drug discount program, which is a U.S. federal government program that requires drug manufacturers participating in the Medicaid program to provide outpatient drugs to eligible health care organizations and covered entities at significantly reduced prices.
