Google, the search engine giant, generated annual revenue of $257.63 billion in the fiscal year 2021, an increase of nearly 41% as compared to the annual revenue of $182.53 billion in 2020. Google earned nearly 81% of its total revenues in 2021 from advertisements.
Google’s advertising revenues are segmented into Google search & other, YouTube ads, and Google Network Members’ properties. In the year 2021, Google search & other revenues amounted to $148.9 billion (43% increase YoY), YouTube Ads generated $28.8 billion in revenues (46% increase YoY) and Google Networks’ revenue amounted to $31 billion (37% increase YoY). The year-over-year growth in advertisements was majorly driven by the growth in mobile usage, increased advertiser spending, increased number of search queries, and the adverse effect of COVID-19 on Google’s 2020 revenues.
In terms of geographic regions, for the fiscal year 2021, Google earns nearly 46% of its total revenue or $117.8 billion from the US, followed by the EMEA region (Europe, the Middle East, & Africa) with 31% or $79 billion, the APAC (Asia-Pacific) contributes 18% or $46 billion and 5% or $14 billion from Canada and Latin America (termed as “Other Americas”).
Google Search & other: consists of revenues generated on Google search properties (including revenues from traffic generated by search distribution partners who use Google.com as their default search in browsers, toolbars, etc.) and other Google-owned and operated properties like Gmail, Google Maps, and Google Play.
YouTube ads: consist of revenues generated primarily on YouTube properties.
Google Network Members’ properties: consist of revenues generated primarily on Google Network Members’ properties participating in AdMob, AdSense, and Google Ad Manager.
