Philip Morris International Inc (PMI) is a manufacturer and distributor of cigarettes, tobacco-related products, and other nicotine-containing products. The company markets several premium, mid-price, and low-price brands, including Marlboro, Virginia Slims, L&M, Chesterfield, Bond Street, Lark, Muratti, Next, Philip Morris, Merit, and Parliament.

Total GHG emissions of PMI in 2021 were 377 thousand tonnes CO2 equivalents (Thousand tCO2eq), a decrease of 10% from 2020. The tobacco company aims to reduce its absolute GHG emissions by 35% in its tobacco supply chain by 2025.

GHG emissions are generally classified into Scope 1,2 & 3 emissions. Scope 1 includes direct GHG emissions from energy generated from fossil fuels and refrigerants. Scope 2 encompasses indirect GHG emissions from the on-site generation and purchase of electricity. Scope 3 involves emissions in the supply chain.

Scope 1 emissions form the central portion of PMI’s total GHG emissions, accounting for around 309 thousand tCO2eq (82%) of total GHG emissions in 2021. PMI’s Scope 2 emissions decreased by about 29% to 64 thousand tCO2eq, and Scope 3 emissions decreased by about 1% to 3.7 thousand tCO2eq in 2021.
