France travel and tourism segment overview
Average Length of Inbound trips in France experienced a minor decline between 2017-2020.
The travel and tourism industry consists of revenues generated by passenger airlines, passenger rail, foodservice, hotels and motels, travel intermediaries, and casinos and gaming markets.
The length of the pandemic and restrictions introduced by various countries are still difficult to predict, though many governments had introduced the national lockdowns and temporarily banned sales of products that are deemed "nonessential".
Market analysis of travel and tourism segment in France
Following moderate growth between 2017 and 2019, the French travel and tourism industry fell into a steep decline in 2020 amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The industry looks set to recover and grow at a healthy rate over the forecast period. In March 2016, the government launched the ‘Destination Paris’ campaign, after consulting industry professionals to determine how to increase the influx of tourists visiting the country following the terrorist attacks. The government decided to increase security measures to encourage tourism and signed an agreement with China under which the police forces of both countries agreed to patrol key destinations in Paris during vacations and holidays. Government initiatives such as this helped to drive growth before the pandemic, particularly after safety concerns were elevated in response to the Charlie Hebdo attack in Paris in January 2015.
As well as causing revenue to decline in the industry, the pandemic has also contributed to the closure of many hotels and motels in the country. Many smaller, independent companies were unable to stay afloat amid the economic conditions in 2020, leading to a decline in the number of establishments that year.
The industry is expected to recover over the coming years, driven by a rebound in tourism as travel restrictions around the globe are lifted.
