Canada, like the rest of the world, saw a major impact on the travel sector as a result of COVID-19. Canada is in a position of growth in that it has established tourism pulls for international inbound visitors which can also be applied to drawing domestic tourists, furthering future recovery, alongside emerging tourism pulls. Leisure is the most popular reason for travel across the board, followed by VFR travel and business.

The Canada Source Tourism market report provides a thorough insight into Canada’s domestic and outbound tourism market. It looks at the profiles of Mexican tourists and summarizes the key reasons for their traveling. Moreover, it offers an in-depth analysis of traveler flows, spending patterns, main destination markets, and current and future opportunities for tourism businesses seeking to tap into the Canada outbound travel market.

What are the key opportunities in the Canada tourism market?

High prices and taxes have suppressed domestic demand in the past, although, new entrants focusing on the low-cost carrier model look set to disrupt the Canadian domestic market and provide much-needed competition. Given Canada’s high prices, limited competition, and lack of low-cost carriers these new entrants will bring plenty of opportunity to provinces within Canada looking to encourage more domestic tourism. Further visa relaxation rules would facilitate greater international flows. Low-cost breaks will be favored, and social media marketing should be embraced to attract younger generations.

How has COVID-19 affected the Canada tourism market?

Canada has remained under a strict international travel ban and initiated a national lockdown in March 2020 like much of the world. Throughout 2021 and into the first quarter of 2022 restrictions throughout the country have varied and depended upon the level of local infection rates. State lockdowns have varied with some being eased recently and others being re-imposed. Given that the international travel ban has been in place without any significant easing of restrictions and that Canadians are avoiding leaving home, travel may take longer to recover within this source market than in others.

Canadian travelers generally take more domestic trips. Hence, domestic travel has already started to recover and is likely to return to pre-pandemic levels before outbound travel. Domestic travel will be considered safer, as people can travel in their own transportation, close to home where they are in a familiar situation should government restrictions be put in place whilst traveling.

What are the key segments in the Canada tourism market?

The key segments in the Canada tourism market are domestic tourism and outbound tourism.

Domestic Tourism

VFR is the most common reason for domestic travel among Canadian travelers and given that the sheer size of Canada lent itself to difficulty visiting relatives during the pandemic, domestic VFR travel is likely to lead to the recovery of domestic travel. The younger generations are more likely to migrate. Given that those who have migrated are younger, family and friends are more likely to visit, or conversely, those that migrated will seek to visit home as the pandemic has made connecting with friends and relatives difficult. The vast majority of Canadian domestic trips are undertaken by road. Land travel in individual vehicles could benefit from the desire to avoid COVID-19. In the short term, this could result in an increase in road travel in private vehicles or through rental car providers. Air travel could experience a decline in usage or a slow uptake before the worry of the virus subsides.

Outbound Tourism

International departures from Canada will not reach 2019 levels until 2024. Recovery for business travel has been slower than any other sector of travel for global tourism, and this has been no different for Canadian outbound business travel. Canadians will travel internationally in 2022, mostly driven by the reopening of the Canada-US border for fully vaccinated travelers. 2022 onwards will see a period of steady growth in outbound departures from Canada, recovering from the lower levels of demand and reluctance to travel abroad due to the pervasiveness of COVID-19 around the world.
