The Swiss Cigars & Cigarillos market expanded from 2005 until 2015. Even though the overall Smoking Tobacco market has declined, the cigarillo segment grew 1% and it has been the most dynamic, with sales volume up by almost 59% since 1990. Cigarillos formed more than three-quarters of volume sales in 2014 while Stumpen accounted for more than 10% of volume compared with almost half of the market in 1990. Large cigars accounted the remaining 10%, compared with 20% in 1990.

• The overall market for cigars and cigarillos amounted to more than 179 million pieces in 2014, which was 3% up on 2013 but 15% lower than in 1990 and about 7% down from 2000 levels
• The Swiss cigar market is divided into five main segments: cigarillos, stumpen, head cigars, Virginia/Brissago and Toscani. The first two accounted for 90% of market volume in 2014, with a combined volume of more than 160 million pieces
• Import values fell back to SFr40 million in 2012 and then to SFr38 million in 2013, but recovered a little in 2014, increasing by 4% to SFr40 million. Import value has increased by almost 4% since 2000
• The Burger Group is by far the largest and most important player in the cigarillo segment with half of the volume in 2014, although this is down 7% compared with 2006
• On current trends, overall market volume is forecast to grow by more than 15% from almost 180 million pieces in 2014 to more than 200 million pieces by 2024, with cigarillos the only growth segment
