Top Expenditure Markets in Inbound Tourism
The US
With COVID-19 concerns still prevalent, the US maintained the top position in inbound spending in 2021. However, a decline in arrivals from Canada, the number one source market for US inbound tourism, has led to a dip. The US government suspended most travel from Western Europe, China, and Iran, in 2020. The new National Travel and Tourism Strategy announced in 2022 is expected to boost the inbound tourism of the country. Moreover, since the vaccine rollout in South and Central America was falling behind the rest of the world, an increasing number of Peruvian tourists visited the US as part of COVID-19 vaccine tourism.
Spain
The tourism sector in Spain witnessed a partial recovery in 2021, with many of the COVID-19 travel restrictions still in place. Due to health restrictions imposed by the government, the sector remained stagnant until May 2021. In the following months, Spain loosened entry restrictions hoping that the summer season would bring more travelers to the country, but travel restrictions and guidelines across Europe hindered this. The delay in international vaccine campaigns and the launch of the European Union COVID passport also made it difficult for Spanish inbound tourism. Though arrivals from the UK showed slight growth in 2021, the recovery to the pre-pandemic level was hanging back.
Turkey
Inbound tourism in Turkey performed well in 2021 with the inbound expenditure showing growth over 2020 and the fourth quarter of 2021 ending with a revenue hike. Istanbul, Antalya, and Edirne were the cities with the greatest number of foreign tourists in 2021. While Russia and Germany remained the top arrival countries, arrivals from Sudan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, and UAE exceeded 2019 numbers. Turkey is hoping to see more foreign tourists with many hospital departments including cardiology, organ transplants, and oncology attracting tourists around the world to have treatments done in the country.
France
France used to be the number one country in terms of international arrivals until the outbreak of coronavirus. With no travel restrictions for fully vaccinated travelers as of July 2022, France is expected to record strong growth in international arrivals in 2022 and is expected to regain its position. Due to the spread of numerous coronavirus variants in the UK, various travel restrictions were in place, preventing tourists from the UK to enter France, leading to less recovery to the pre-pandemic level.
Italy
With international travel restrictions remaining in place for much of the year, Italian inbound tourism performed poorly in 2021. From regional travel bans to the extension of mandatory quarantine policies, crucial steps taken by the government have cost the tourism sector quite a lot. Mandatory health passes and international travel restrictions implemented over the year have led to a downfall in inbound tourism. Concerns regarding numerous virus variants were also there. With poor recovery rates, the sector performed even worse than in 2020.
