Spain’s inflation rate has been softening, driving less than half of consumers to expect the economy to get worse in the next six months. Financial pressures have resulted in around half of the Spanish consumers buying more of a store’s own-brand products, and the remaining portion switching to cheaper stores and cheaper brand alternatives, respectively, reducing retailer and brand loyalty.

Younger shoppers anticipate spending more on apparel over the next six months, owing to their keen interest in staying up to date with the latest trends. In contrast, a greater proportion of over 55s are planning to spend less on both clothing & accessories and footwear, as their styles tend to be more focused on classic pieces. This makes it easier for them to cut back when their budgets are squeezed.

A high proportion of consumers across all genders and age groups have purchased apparel in the past 12 months. Womenswear is slightly more popular than menswear. This can be attributed to women’s desire for more frequent wardrobe updates. The gap between genders widens within footwear, due to the more diverse range of styles available for women.
