Scope
– The EU Commission has stated that the Pack Traceability system will be mandatory for all tobacco products manufactured in the region, even if the product is to be exported to countries that do not permit such markings. The commission explained that these measures are to monitor and prevent the illicit tobacco trade, and as such, must include countries outside of the EU. The traceability system is in line with the Tobacco Products Directive 2014/40/EU and the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) Protocol to Eliminate Illicit Trade in Tobacco Products.
– A suggestion to regulate heat-not-burn products under the same regulations as combustible cigarettes was made to the World Health Organization’s Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) at the Conference of the Parties eighth session (COP8). The conference aims to limit the tobacco industry’s influence, restrict damage from tobacco to the environment, and implement anti-smoking measures to encourage users to quit. Approximately 200 countries and organizations participate, and the next one is expected to be held in the Netherlands in 2020.
