The consumption of illicit cigarettes in India has increased by 90% over the last 10 years, according to a recent report by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI). Illicit cigarette consumption in India has gone from 12.5 billion to 23.9 billion pieces during the past 10 years.

Sampoerna has projected a 2% decline in its cigarette sales volume this year due to an excise-driven price hike, according to the company’s third-quarter results.

In September 2016, Japan Tobacco reported monthly sales of 8.7 billion pieces, a drop of 6.5% compared with the previous month. Overall, the total Japanese cigarette market stood at 14.4 billion pieces in September 2016, which is 5.3% less than September 2016’s market volume.
