Gold production in China
China is the world’s largest gold producer and consumer. It held majority of gold reserves as of January 2021 according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).
China’s gold production is expected to shrink in 2021, against the previous year- this was mainly due to depletion of the country’s gold resources and strict environmental regulations imposed on gold and other minerals which has led to the closure of many small and inefficient mines. Mining companies are also required to implement measures for reducing emissions while mines are operating, rather than taking measures after the mine has closed. The strict environmental regulations are leading to cost increases and lower profits for domestic mining companies, specifically artisan and small-scale companies.
Gold production
Following the past trend, China’s gold production is expected to fall in 2021, against the previous year – mainly due to depletion of the country’s gold resources and strict environmental regulations imposed on gold and other minerals which has led to the closure of many small and inefficient mines.
The country has been tackling issues related to frequent policy changes and depleting ore reserves, to which the pandemic became an additional challenge in 2020. Depletion of reserves, coupled with strict environmental regulations related to gold and other minerals, is leading to increasing international partnerships and joint ventures to enable these mines to meet both domestic and international standards.
