Waste Generation by Heineken

Waste is a two-sided problem in the consumer goods industry. Some products are disposed of for multiple reasons; on the other side, the waste is generated through packaging. There has been an increasing amount of single-use plastic and waste produced by consumer goods companies.

Waste Management in Consumer Sector

Companies need to be more mindful of the waste generated throughout their value chain. Companies like Procter & Gamble and Dabur India recently announced that they have achieved 'plastic waste neutrality’ by recycling a big chunk of their post-consumer plastic packaging waste. Companies have been under pressure to manage waste to be environmentally sustainable and increase consumer awareness. Being responsible for the environment helps companies attract new customers as consumers prefer to do business with companies that share their values.

Waste Management by Heineken

Heineken NV (Heineken) is a brewing company that develops, markets, and sells alcoholic beverages. Heineken markets and sells its beer products under various regional, local, and specialty brands such as Amstel, Desperados, Sol, Tiger, Tecate, Red Stripe, and Birra Moretti.

Total waste generated by Heineken in 2021 was 4.5 million tonnes, an increase of 6% from 2020. Heineken reused 21,312 tonnes of waste during the same year. 81% of the total waste generated was used for animal feed, 7.4% of total waste was used as compost, and 7% of total waste was used as material in 2021. Heineken disposed of 62,640 tonnes of waste in landfills in the same year.

Heineken has set a target to send zero waste to landfill across all its production sites worldwide by 2025. Heineken is working on maximizing circularity in its operations by reusing spent grains in animal and human food sources, recovering biogas and organic fertilizer through its wastewater sludge, recycling water within its breweries, and increasing its returnable bottles.
