Impact of COVID-19 on meat and livestock market in the USA

The US meat and livestock market experienced strong growth in 2020, at an accelerated rate to the previous year. However, the market remained in decline overall in the historic period due to two years of successive contraction in 2017 and 2018. Looking forwards, the market is expected to enter a decline in 2021 and a return to sluggish positive growth is not anticipated until 2024. The COVID-19 pandemic has had a mixed effect on the US meat and livestock market. On one hand, nationwide lockdown measures and social distancing restrictions have impacted business productivity and disrupted supply chains. This has contributed to a slowdown in production volume. However, with demand for meat outpacing supply, particularly as consumers have spent more time cooking for themselves at home during the pandemic, meat prices have been driven up.

Cattle continues to dominate the market in the US thanks to the cultural attachment to fast-food restaurants which commonly use beef as the primary ingredient in burgers and other food items. Consequently, even though beef consumption has declined during the past decade, the likelihood is it will continue to occupy the majority of the market in the coming years. Pig meat, pork, has increased its share, alongside chicken, thanks to a greater emphasis on cost. Furthermore, there is political pressure to impose greater regulation upon the market. Large dead zones have appeared in the Gulf of Mexico partly due to chemical pollution from cattle farming washing into water ways. In addition, beef production is frequently cited as a leading cause of methane gas emissions. Both could result in greater costs for the market if campaigners succeed in ambitions to increase regulation, increasing costs and reducing market performance.
