Rio Turbio Coal Mine in Santa Cruz, was the largest underground mine in Argentina, producing approximately 1.51 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Rio Turbio Coal Mine is owned by Yacimientos Carboniferos Rio Turbio. The second largest underground mine with an estimated 0.89 mmtpa of ROM and primarily producing copper (4,192.26 thousand ounces), was the Cerro Negro Project located in Santa Cruz. The Cerro Negro Project is owned by Newmont Corp, and is due to operate until 2032.
Manantial Espejo Mine located in Santa Cruz was the third-largest mine, the San Jose Silver Gold Mine located in Santa Cruz was the fourth-largest mine, and the Joaquin Project located in Santa Cruz was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 0.68 mmtpa, 0.53 mmtpa and 0.1 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. Primarily, the Manantial Espejo Mine produced approximately 3,235.6 thousand ounces of silver, the San Jose Silver Gold Mine produced approximately 5,250 thousand ounces of silver, and the Joaquin Project produced approximately 1,714.16 thousand ounces of silver in the year 2021. The Manantial Espejo Mine is owned by Pan American Silver Corp which is due to operate until 2023, the San Jose Silver Gold Mine is owned by Hochschild Mining plc;McEwen Mining Inc which is due to operate until 2025 and the Joaquin Project is owned by Pan American Silver Corp which is due to operate until 2024.
The five largest underground mines, i.e., Rio Turbio Coal Mine, Cerro Negro Project, Manantial Espejo Mine, San Jose Silver Gold Mine, and Joaquin Project, cumulatively produced approximately 3.71 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
