Mount Isa Zinc Mine in Queensland, was the largest lead-producing mine in Australia, producing approximately 132.9 thousand tonnes of lead and an estimated 8.1 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Mount Isa Zinc Mine is owned by Glencore Plc, and is due to operate until 2029. The second largest lead-producing mine with an estimated lead production of 114 thousand tonnes and an estimated 2.82 mmtpa of ROM, was the Cannington Mine located in Queensland. The Cannington Mine is owned by South32 Ltd, and is due to operate until 2031.
McArthur River Mine (Zinc) located in Northern Territory was the third-largest mine, the Hellyer Mine located in Tasmania was the fourth-largest mine, and the Rosebery Mine located in Tasmania was the fifth-largest mine, with a total lead production of 55.2 thousand tonnes, 26.9 thousand tonnes and 26.6 thousand tonnes, respectively, in 2021. The McArthur River Mine (Zinc), the Hellyer Mine and the Rosebery Mine had an estimated ROM production of 3.9 mmtpa, 1.46 mmtpa and 1 mmtpa respectively. The McArthur River Mine (Zinc) is owned by Glencore Plc which is due to operate until 2038, the Hellyer Mine is owned by NQ Minerals Plc which is due to operate until 2028 and the Rosebery Mine is owned by China Minmetals Corp which is due to operate until 2023.
The five largest lead mines, i.e., Mount Isa Zinc Mine, Cannington Mine, McArthur River Mine (Zinc), Hellyer Mine, and Rosebery Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 355.6 thousand tonnes of lead, 17.32 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
