Mount Keith Mine in Western Australia, was the largest nickel-producing mine in Australia, producing approximately 38.6 thousand tonnes of nickel and an estimated 8.7 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Mount Keith Mine is owned by BHP, and is due to operate until 2037. The second largest nickel-producing mine with an estimated nickel production of 30.1 thousand tonnes and an estimated 4.01 mmtpa of ROM, was the Murrin Murrin Mine located in Western Australia. The Murrin Murrin Mine is owned by Glencore Plc, and is due to operate until 2042.
Nova Bollinger Project located in Western Australia was the third-largest mine, the Ravensthorpe Mine located in Western Australia was the fourth-largest mine, and the Leinster Mine located in Western Australia was the fifth-largest mine, with a total nickel production of 29 thousand tonnes, 28.6 thousand tonnes and 20.9 thousand tonnes, respectively, in 2021. The Nova Bollinger Project, the Ravensthorpe Mine and the Leinster Mine had an estimated ROM production of 1.59 mmtpa, 5.99 mmtpa and 2.33 mmtpa respectively. The Nova Bollinger Project is owned by IGO Ltd which is due to operate until 2027, the Ravensthorpe Mine is owned by First Quantum Minerals Ltd which is due to operate until 2051 and the Leinster Mine is owned by BHP which is due to operate until 2033.
The five largest nickel mines, i.e., Mount Keith Mine, Murrin Murrin Mine, Nova Bollinger Project, Ravensthorpe Mine, and Leinster Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 147.2 thousand tonnes of nickel, 22.64 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
