Cadia Mine in New South Wales, was the largest underground mine in Australia, producing approximately 32.51 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) and primarily produced copper (106.4 thousand tonnes) in 2021. The Cadia Mine is owned by Newcrest Mining Ltd, and is due to operate until 2048. The second largest underground mine with an estimated 8.7 mmtpa of ROM and primarily producing copper (205.3 thousand tonnes), was the Olympic Dam Mine located in South Australia. The Olympic Dam Mine is owned by BHP, and is due to operate until 2062.
Kestrel Mine located in Queensland was the third-largest mine, the Ulan West Mine located in New South Wales was the fourth-largest mine, and the Broadmeadow Mine located in Queensland was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 7.48 mmtpa, 6.92 mmtpa and 6.84 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. The Kestrel Mine is owned by Mitsui Kestrel Coal Investment Pty Ltd;EMR Capital Group;PT Adaro Energy Tbk which is due to operate until 2055, the Ulan West Mine is owned by Glencore Plc which is due to operate until 2033 and the Broadmeadow Mine is owned by BHP;Mitsubishi Corp which is due to operate until 2056.
The five largest underground mines, i.e., Cadia Mine, Olympic Dam Mine, Kestrel Mine, Ulan West Mine, and Broadmeadow Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 62.45 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
