Terrafamen Sotkamo Mine in Kainuu, was the largest surface mine in Finland, producing approximately 16.15 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) and primarily produced zinc (53.86 thousand tonnes) in 2021. The Terrafamen Sotkamo Mine is owned by Sampo plc;Trafigura Group Pte Ltd;Finnish Minerals Group Ltd, and is due to operate until 2029. The second largest surface mine with an estimated 9.86 mmtpa of ROM and primarily producing zinc (28.73 thousand tonnes), was the Kevitsa Mine located in Lapland. The Kevitsa Mine is owned by Boliden AB, and is due to operate until 2044.
Senkkeri Quarry located in Uusimaa was the third-largest mine, the Kalkkimaa Dolomite Quarry located in Lapland was the fourth-largest mine, and the Siilinjarvi Phosphate Mine located in Northern Savonia was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 2.28 mmtpa, 1.26 mmtpa and 0.93 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. The Senkkeri Quarry is owned by Seepsula Oy, the Kalkkimaa Dolomite Quarry is owned by Sma Mineral Holding AB and the Siilinjarvi Phosphate Mine is owned by Yara International ASA which is due to operate until 2036.
The five largest surface mines, i.e., Terrafamen Sotkamo Mine, Kevitsa Mine, Senkkeri Quarry, Kalkkimaa Dolomite Quarry, and Siilinjarvi Phosphate Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 30.48 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
