Finland: Five Largest Surface Mines in 2021

  • Terrafamen Sotkamo Mine in Kainuu, was the largest surface mine in Finland, producing approximately 16.15 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) and primarily produced zinc (53.86 thousand tonnes) in 2021. The Terrafamen Sotkamo Mine is owned by Sampo plc;Trafigura Group Pte Ltd;Finnish Minerals Group Ltd, and is due to operate until 2029. The second largest surface mine with an estimated 9.86 mmtpa of ROM and primarily producing zinc (28.73 thousand tonnes), was the Kevitsa Mine located in Lapland. The Kevitsa Mine is owned by Boliden AB, and is due to operate until 2044.
