Global : Five Largest Diamond Mines in 2021

  • Jwaneng Mine in Kgalagadi District, Botswana, was the largest diamond-producing mine in the world, producing approximately 18.6 million carats of diamond and an estimated 10.17 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Jwaneng Mine is owned by Government of Botswana, and is due to operate until 2036. The second largest diamond-producing mine with an estimated diamond production of 13.4 million carats and an estimated 2.39 mmtpa of ROM, was the Kao Mine located in Butha-Buthe, Botswana. The Kao Mine is owned by Namakwa Diamonds Limited, and is due to operate until 2034.

  • Orapa Mine located in Central District, Botswana was the third-largest mine, the Catoca Mine located in Lunda Sul, Angola was the fourth-largest mine, and the Gahcho Kue Project located in Northwest Territories, Canada was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated diamond production of 10.6 million carats, 6.9 million carats and 6.4 million carats, respectively, in 2021 The Orapa Mine is owned by Government of Botswana which is due to operate until 2036, the Catoca Mine is owned by ALROSA which is due to operate until 2037 and the Gahcho Kue Project is owned by Mountain Province Diamonds Inc which is due to operate until 2036.

  • The five largest diamond mines, i.e., Jwaneng Mine, Kao Mine, Orapa Mine, Catoca Mine, and Gahcho Kue Project, cumulatively produced approximately 55.9 million carats of diamond, 26.70 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
