India: Five Largest Surface and Underground Mines in 2021

  • Amelia Coal Block Mine in Madhya Pradesh, was the largest surface and underground mine in India, producing approximately 7.92 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Amelia Coal Block Mine is owned by THDC India Ltd, and is due to operate until 2049. The second largest surface and underground mine with an estimated 4.36 mmtpa of ROM, was the Yellandu Coal Mine located in Telangana. The Yellandu Coal Mine is owned by Singareni Collieries Co Ltd, and is due to operate until 2034.

  • Amalgamated Keshalpur West Mududih Mine located in Jharkhand was the third-largest mine, the Talaipalli Coal Mine located in Chhattisgarh was the fourth-largest mine, and the Gare Pelma IV 2 & 3 Mine located in Chhattisgarh was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 3.74 mmtpa, 3.73 mmtpa and 3.63 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. The Amalgamated Keshalpur West Mududih Mine is owned by Coal India Ltd which is due to operate until 2042, the Talaipalli Coal Mine is owned by NTPC Ltd which is due to operate until 2071 and the Gare Pelma IV 2 & 3 Mine is owned by Jindal Steel & Power Ltd which is due to operate until 2045.

  • The five largest surface and underground mines, i.e., Amelia Coal Block Mine, Yellandu Coal Mine, Amalgamated Keshalpur West Mududih Mine, Talaipalli Coal Mine, and Gare Pelma IV 2 & 3 Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 23.39 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
