Sangatta Mine in East Kalimantan, was the largest coal-producing mine in Indonesia, producing approximately 49.2 million tonnes of coal and an estimated 51.4 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Sangatta Mine is owned by PT Bumi Resources Tbk. The second largest coal-producing mine with an estimated coal production of 35.7 million tonnes and an estimated 35.18 mmtpa of ROM, was the Pasir Mine located in East Kalimantan. The Pasir Mine is owned by PT Indika Energy Tbk.
Tutupan Mine located in South Kalimantan was the third-largest mine, the FTB Project located in East Kalimantan was the fourth-largest mine, and the Borneo Indobara Mine located in South Kalimantan was the fifth-largest mine, with a total coal production of 31.8 million tonnes, 30.9 million tonnes and 25.7 million tonnes, respectively, in 2021. The Tutupan Mine, the FTB Project and the Borneo Indobara Mine had an estimated ROM production of 26.07 mmtpa, 31.11 mmtpa and 25.86 mmtpa respectively. The Tutupan Mine is owned by PT Adaro Energy Tbk, the FTB Project is owned by PT Bayan Resources Tbk which is due to operate until 2055 and the Borneo Indobara Mine is owned by PT Dian Swastatika Sentosa Tbk which is due to operate until 2036.
The five largest coal mines, i.e., Sangatta Mine, Pasir Mine, Tutupan Mine, FTB Project, and Borneo Indobara Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 173.3 million tonnes of coal, 169.62 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
