Sorowako Mine in South Sulawesi, was the largest nickel-producing mine in Indonesia, producing approximately 79 thousand tonnes of nickel and an estimated 4.2 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Sorowako Mine is owned by Vale SA, and is due to operate until 2045. The second largest nickel-producing mine with an estimated nickel production of 40 thousand tonnes and an estimated 14 mmtpa of ROM, was the Weda Bay Project located in South Sulawesi. The Weda Bay Project is owned by Tsingshan Holding Group Co Ltd, and is due to operate until 2069.
Asera Project located in South East Sulawesi was the third-largest mine, the Pomalaa Mine located in South East Sulawesi was the fourth-largest mine, and the Bahoomahi Mine located in Central Sulawesi was the fifth-largest mine, with a total nickel production of 32.4 thousand tonnes, 23.2 thousand tonnes and 19.5 thousand tonnes, respectively, in 2021. The Asera Project, the Pomalaa Mine and the Bahoomahi Mine had an estimated ROM production of 2.4 mmtpa, 1.44 mmtpa and 1.14 mmtpa respectively. The Asera Project is owned by Solway Investment Group Ltd, the Pomalaa Mine is owned by PT Indonesia Asahan Aluminium and the Bahoomahi Mine is owned by Solway Investment Group Ltd.
The five largest nickel mines, i.e., Sorowako Mine, Weda Bay Project, Asera Project, Pomalaa Mine, and Bahoomahi Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 194.1 thousand tonnes of nickel, 23.13 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
