Jelsa Quarry in Rogaland, was the largest surface mine in Norway, producing approximately 11 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Jelsa Quarry is owned by Mibau Holding GmbH. The second largest surface mine with an estimated 2.64 mmtpa of ROM, was the Akselberg Mine located in Nordland. The Akselberg Mine is owned by Norsk Mineral AS.
Kirkenes Mine located in Finnmark was the third-largest mine, the Tellnes Mine located in Hordaland was the fourth-largest mine, and the Kjopsvik Mine located in Nordland was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 2 mmtpa, 1.86 mmtpa and 1.45 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. The Kirkenes Mine is owned by Arctic Bulk Minerals A/S, the Tellnes Mine is owned by Kronos Norge A/S and the Kjopsvik Mine is owned by HeidelbergCement AG.
The five largest surface mines, i.e., Jelsa Quarry, Akselberg Mine, Kirkenes Mine, Tellnes Mine, and Kjopsvik Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 18.95 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
