Warcha Salt Mines in Punjab, was the largest underground mine in Pakistan, producing approximately 0.63 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Warcha Salt Mines is owned by Pakistan Mineral Development Corporation. The second largest underground mine with an estimated 0.55 mmtpa of ROM and primarily producing copper (80.99 thousand tonnes), was the Duddar Mine located in Balochistan. The Duddar Mine is owned by Metallurgical Corporation of China Ltd, and is due to operate until 2025.
Khewra Salt Mines located in Punjab was the third-largest mine, the Lakhra Collieries Project located in Sindh was the fourth-largest mine, and the Shahrigh Coal Mines located in Balochistan was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 0.39 mmtpa, 0.27 mmtpa and 0.19 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. The Khewra Salt Mines is owned by Pakistan Mineral Development Corporation, the Lakhra Collieries Project is owned by Pakistan Mineral Development Corporation;Government of Sindh;Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) and the Shahrigh Coal Mines is owned by Government of Pakistan.
The five largest underground mines, i.e., Warcha Salt Mines, Duddar Mine, Khewra Salt Mines, Lakhra Collieries Project, and Shahrigh Coal Mines, cumulatively produced approximately 2.02 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
