Aitik Mine in Norrbotten, was the largest surface mine in Sweden, producing approximately 41.77 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) and primarily produced copper (79.99 thousand tonnes) in 2021. The Aitik Mine is owned by Boliden AB. The second largest surface mine with an estimated 6.1 mmtpa of ROM, was the Vikan Kross Quarry located in Vastra Gotaland. The Vikan Kross Quarry is owned by Skanska AB.
Leveaniemi Project located in Norrbotten was the third-largest mine, the Kaunisvaara Project located in Norrbotten was the fourth-largest mine, and the Stucks Limestone Quarry located in Gotland was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 4.99 mmtpa, 1.87 mmtpa and 0.71 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. The Leveaniemi Project is owned by Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara AB, the Kaunisvaara Project is owned by Kaunis Iron AB which is due to operate until 2029 and the Stucks Limestone Quarry is owned by Sma Mineral Holding AB.
The five largest surface mines, i.e., Aitik Mine, Vikan Kross Quarry, Leveaniemi Project, Kaunisvaara Project, and Stucks Limestone Quarry, cumulatively produced approximately 55.44 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
