Morenci Mine in Arizona, was the largest mine in United States, producing approximately 169.45 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) and primarily produced copper (397.52 thousand tonnes) in 2021. The Morenci Mine is owned by Freeport-McMoRan Inc;Sumitomo Corp;Sumitomo Metal Mining Co Ltd, and is due to operate until 2045. The second largest mine with approximately 76.51 mmtpa of ROM, was the North Antelope Rochelle Mine located in Wyoming. The North Antelope Rochelle Mine is owned by Peabody Energy Corp, and is due to operate until 2047.
Black Thunder Mine located in Wyoming was the third-largest mine, the Minntac Mine located in Minnesota was the fourth-largest mine, and the Kennecott Copper Project located in Utah was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 67.3 mmtpa, 58.19 mmtpa and 39.89 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. The Black Thunder Mine is owned by Arch Resources Inc, the Minntac Mine is owned by United States Steel Corp which is due to operate until 2032 and the Kennecott Copper Project is owned by Rio Tinto which is due to operate until 2033.
The five largest mines, i.e., Morenci Mine, North Antelope Rochelle Mine, Black Thunder Mine, Minntac Mine, and Kennecott Copper Project, cumulatively produced approximately 411.34 mmtpa of ROM in 2021
