Cortez Mine in Nevada, was the largest surface and underground mine in United States, producing approximately 25.66 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) and primarily produced gold (735.28 thousand ounces) in 2021. The Cortez Mine is owned by Barrick Gold Corp;Newmont Corp, and is due to operate until 2032. The second largest surface and underground mine with an estimated 16.24 mmtpa of ROM and primarily producing gold (3,609.73 thousand ounces), was the Carlin Mine located in Nevada. The Carlin Mine is owned by Barrick Gold Corp;Newmont Corp, and is due to operate until 2033.
Turquoise Ridge Mine located in Nevada was the third-largest mine, the Deepwater Mine located in West Virginia was the fourth-largest mine, and the Jim Bridger Mine located in Wyoming was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 6.27 mmtpa, 3.63 mmtpa and 3.15 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. The Turquoise Ridge Mine is owned by Newmont Corp;Barrick Gold Corp which is due to operate until 2040, the Deepwater Mine is owned by Essar Global Fund Ltd and the Jim Bridger Mine is owned by Idacorp Inc;Berkshire Hathaway Energy Co which is due to operate until 2038.
The five largest surface and underground mines, i.e., Cortez Mine, Carlin Mine, Turquoise Ridge Mine, Deepwater Mine, and Jim Bridger Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 54.95 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
