Minntac Mine in Minnesota, was the largest surface iron ore-producing mine in United States, producing approximately 12.8 million tonnes of iron ore and an estimated 58.19 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Minntac Mine is owned by United States Steel Corp, and is due to operate until 2031. The second largest surface iron ore-producing mine with an estimated production of 7.8 million tonnes of iron ore and approximately 19.22 mmtpa of ROM, was the Tilden Mine located in Michigan. The Tilden Mine is owned by Cleveland-Cliffs Inc.
Hibbing Taconite Mines located in Minnesota was the third-largest mine, the Keetac Mine located in Minnesota was the fourth-largest mine, and the Northshore-Peter Mitchel Mine located in Minnesota was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated iron ore production of 7 million tonnes, 5.3 million tonnes and 5.1 million tonnes, respectively, in 2021. The Hibbing Taconite Mines, the Keetac Mine and the Northshore-Peter Mitchel Mine had an estimated ROM production of 28.45 mmtpa, 25.96 mmtpa and 20.47 mmtpa respectively. The Hibbing Taconite Mines is owned by Cleveland-Cliffs Incwhich is due to operate until 2024, the Keetac Mine is owned by United States Steel Corp and the Northshore-Peter Mitchel Mine is owned by Cleveland-Cliffs Inc.
The five largest iron ore mines, i.e., Minntac Mine, Tilden Mine, Hibbing Taconite Mines, Keetac Mine, and Northshore-Peter Mitchel Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 38 million tonnes of iron ore, 152.29 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
