Iranian Gas Trunk line–IGAT XI is the Longest Planned Pipeline in the Middle East by 2026

  • The Middle East continues to be one of the major contributors to the global trunk/transmission pipelines development during 2022 to 2026. Most of these pipelines are being planned mainly for domestic consumption and a few for exports
  • A total of 39 new-build pipelines with more than 9,417 kilometers (km) in length have been approved for development and are expected to start operations by 2026
  • Natural gas pipeline development in the Middle East region is concentrated in Iran, accounting for about half of the total planned pipeline length by 2026

The Iranian Gas Trunk line–IGAT XI gas pipeline in Iran is the longest upcoming pipeline project in the Middle East from 2022 to 2026 with a proposed length of 1,2000 km. The project is currently in the construction stage and is expected to start operations in 2022. It helps to transport gas from resource-rich southern Iran to demand areas in the northern parts of the country.

Tabesh product pipeline, also in Iran, is the second-longest upcoming product pipeline in the region with a length of 948 km. The National Iranian Oil Refining and Distribution Co-operated pipeline is expected to start operations by 2026. The pipeline runs through cities in central and southern Iran such as Rafsanjan and ends at the city of Mashhad in the northeast. It helps to meet the domestic demand for petroleum products in these cities and can be used for potential exports to Afghanistan.

The third-largest upcoming pipeline in the Middle East. Abadan–Rey, is also in Iran with a total length of 920 km. This onshore product pipeline would be operated by the Iranian Oil Pipeline and Telecommunication Co and planned from Khuzestan (Iran) and ends in Tehran (Iran). The project is in the commissioning stage and is expected to commence operation in 2022.

The Rafsanjan–Isfahan pipeline in Iran, stands fourth with a pipeline length of 536 km and is expected to start operations by 2022. This is a product pipeline project that would be owned by National Iranian Oil Refining and Distribution Co and transverses through Kerman (Iran) to Isfahan (Iran).

The fifth-longest planned pipeline is the North Field East System in Qatar with a total length of 500 km. To be operated and owned by QatarEnergy, the pipeline would start operations in 2025. The pipeline helps to transport gas produced from the North Field East project for exports.
