Iron ore Production in Brazil
Brazil is home to the world’s second largest iron ore reserves, after Australia. As of February 2021, Brazil had a significant share of crude ore reserves, of which majority was iron content, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS). Brazilian iron ore reserves are predominantly located in the states of Minas Gerais and Para. Brazil’s largest producer, Vale, operates through different systems, referred to as the Northern, Southeastern and Southern systems.
Brazil’s Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) is responsible for the development of science and technology. Geology, mineral and energy resources, hydropower, mining and metallurgy, oil, fuel and electricity are the primary areas of concern for the MME. The National Mining Agency (ANM) is a federal agency responsible for the implementation of national policy pertaining to mining.
Iron ore production
Brazil is the world’s second largest iron ore producer, after Australia. Brazil’s iron ore production fell in 2020, due to lower output from the country’s largest producer, Vale SA, which accounted for majority of the country’s total production. Vale’s iron ore production fell in 2020, due to tailings dam restrictions, a delay in the resumption of the Serra Norte mine, heavy rainfall at the northern and southeast systems and the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak.
Key Iron ore producer
Vale SA is a Brazil-based metals and mining company, and the world’s second-largest iron ore producer behind Rio Tinto. In 2019, the company’s production was severely impacted by the Brumadinho tailings dam disaster. It immediately ordered a halt in production at units where some of these dams were located, including the Aboboras, Vargem Grande, Capitao do Mato and Tamandua operations in the Vargem Grande complex and the Jangada, Fabrica, Segredo, Joao Pereira and Alto Bandeira operations in the Paraopeba complex.
