Aeon Company (Aeon) is a retail company that operates a chain of supermarkets, discount stores, convenience stores, small-scale supermarkets, specialty stores, drugstores, pharmacies, and e-commerce businesses. The company carries out various businesses including shopping-mall development, banking, credit card, insurance services, mobile marketing, facilities management services, amusement services, food services, and others. It offers a wide range of products such as casual and women’s apparel, drugs, baby products, footwear, and other consumer products. The company opened a total of 647 stores in FY2021 bringing the overall store count to 19,595. During the year the company completed the acquisition of CAN DO company and Allianz Life Insurance. Aeon’s operations are spread across Japan, South Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Australia, India, Cambodia, and China. Aeon is headquartered in Chiba, Japan.
By the end of FY2021, Aeon operated with 19,595 stores globally compared to 18,948 stores in FY2020 YoY. It added a total of 647 stores in FY2021 as a result of its M&A activities and new store openings across various segments. Aeon Financial Service, a consolidated subsidiary of the Company, acquired the shares of Allianz Life Insurance on March 31, 2020, and made it a subsidiary. Aeon also acquired the shares of CAN DO through a series of transactions, and CAN DO and Kei Corporation became consolidated subsidiaries of the Company.
In FY2020, Aeon as a part of its reorganization activities, in April 2020 sold its entire shareholding in Zwei Company and terminated the business operated by Talbots Japan Company in May 2020. In October 2020, Aeon terminated the businesses operated by Claire’s Nippon Company and also sold its entire shareholding in Aeon Forest company that operated The Body Shop in Japan.
In FY2018, in January, Aeon conducted a sale at some 420 Group stores to commemorate the impending coming into effect of the Japan-EU Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA). This bought down the store count to 18,945 in FY2018 compared to 21,609 in FY2017 YoY.
