The Kroger (Kroger) is one of the world’s leading retailers, by revenue. Their retail business includes food retail, retail pharmacies, and fuel centers. Kroger is diversified across brands, product categories, channels of distribution, geographies, and consumer demographics. As of FY2021, Kroger operated, 2,726 supermarkets, of which 2,252 were pharmacies and 1,613 were fuel centers. It closed down 16 stores in the same year. The company sells its private label products under various banners such as Baker's, Harris Teeter, Kroger, Dillons, Fry's, Fred Meyer, Gerbes, Home Chef, QFC, and The Little Clinic. It offers personalized orders, online orders, and pick-up at 2,257 of its supermarkets and provides home delivery services, which allows them to offer digital solutions to at least 98% of its customers. Kroger is headquartered in Cincinnati, Ohio, the US.
In FY2021, Kroger operated supermarkets under a variety of local banner names in 35 states and the District of Columbia. Approximately 50% of their supermarkets were operated in company-owned facilities, including some Company-owned buildings on leased land. Their retail operations represent 97% of our consolidated sales.
The company closed down 16 stores in FY2021 bringing the count down to 2,726 compared to 2,742 stores in FY2020 YoY. On January 27, 2020, Lucky’s Market their grocery chain filed a voluntary petition in the Bankruptcy Court seeking relief under the Bankruptcy Code.
On April 26, 2019, Kroger sold its Turkey Hill Dairy business for $225 million. And on March 13, 2019, it sold You Technology business to Inmar for total consideration of $565 million, which bought the total store count to 2,720 in FY2020 compared to 2,757 stores in FY2019 YoY.
Total sales increased by 4.1% in FY2021, compared to FY2020 YoY. The increase was primarily due to an increase in supermarket fuel sales. Total supermarket fuel sales increased by 54.7% in FY2021, as compared to FY2020 YoY, primarily due to an increase in fuel by gallons sold and average retail fuel price growth. Total sales, excluding fuel, increased 0.2% in FY2021, compared to FY2020 YoY, which was due to unprecedented demand due to the COVID-19 pandemic during 2020.
