Loblaw Companies is one of the largest retailers and distributors of food and pharmaceutical products. The company has its business operations through shopper’s drug mart, retail stores, and discounted stores. These include franchise-owned retail food stores, associate-owned drug stores, and in-store pharmacies. Some of its brands are President’s Choice, no name, express, Zehrs, Pharmaprix, and Wellwise, among others. The company owns and manages various retail stores in Canada. In FY2021, 23 food and drug stores were opened, and 24 of them were closed, resulting in a net shutdown of one store bringing the total store count from 2,439 in FY2020 to 2,438 stores in FY2021 YoY.
The Company has two operating segments with all its material operations carried out in Canada: The Retail segment consists primarily of corporate and franchise-owned retail food stores and Associate owned drug stores. It also includes in-store pharmacies and other health and beauty products, apparel, and other general merchandise and supports the PC Optimum™ Program.
The Financial Services segment provides credit card and everyday banking services, the PC Optimum Program, insurance brokerage services, and telecommunication services.
During FY2021, Loblaw’s revenue grew by 0.9% YoY primarily due to an increase in retail segment sales driven by same-store sales growth. Also, the financial services segment sales gredw during the year.
