Which key cuisines did the consumers find most appealing in 2021?
Some of the key cuisines that the consumers found most appealing in 2021 were Italian, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Mexican, French, Thai, American, Spanish, and Indian.
Globally, almost half of consumers found Italian cuisine the most appealing. Following this, Chinese and Japanese remain in the top 5 cuisine types along with Mexican and French cuisines. More than 15% of global consumers found Thai, American, and Spanish the most appealing cuisines. There is a notable proportion of consumers who are inclined towards these cuisine types, as they are influenced by their regional dishes.
Italian cuisine
Italian cuisine is more popular in Central and South America followed by Europe and North America. According to GlobalData’s 2021 Q4 consumer survey, more Brazilian consumers and Argentine consumers also found Italian cuisine appealing. These locations were the destination of many Italian immigrants in the 19th century who brought to the country Italian cuisine and customs. Moreover, Italian cuisine is the most preferred across all generations, especially among Boomers and Silent Generation who prefer simple recipes with fresh ingredients.
Chinese cuisine
North Americans have a higher propensity to choose Chinese cuisine as the second most appealing, due to many Chinese restaurants in the country where some of which were opened by Chinese immigrants who arrived in the 19th century. Europeans also consider Chinese cuisine the second most appealing cuisine after Italian cuisine. Moreover, the older generations prefer Chinese cuisine in comparison to Gen Z consumers.
Japanese cuisine
Japan is well-known for having the highest number of centenarians because the diet contains a variety of dishes cooked in healthy ways. Asian and Australasian consumers have shown the strongest level of appeal to Japanese cuisine. Japanese cuisine is also very popular among Central and South American consumers.
