Scope
• The Belgian Health Minister has launched an anti-tobacco plan that aims to bring the percentage of smokers to less than 17% by 2018. Currently 18.3% of residents in Belgium are regular smokers.
• Health Canada is studying the possibility of forcing companies to make their cigarettes less addictive. The department issued a tender recently calling for an outside researcher to add to the government’s own extensive analysis of the idea and how it would affect public health.
• A draft amendment bill has been proposed in Shanghai to extend the city’s restrictions on tobacco smoking. Currently, there are 13 public areas where smoking is banned, including primary schools, kindergartens and children’s hospitals. However, under the new proposal smoking will be banned in other public venues such as work places, public places, parks and tourist attractions and any public venue where minors are present.
• The government has banned for one year the manufacture, sale, purchase and storage of all forms of chewing tobacco, including pan masala, gutka, flavored /scented tobacco and kharra. The ban came into effect on April 13th, 2016.
