Total GHG emissions of British American Tobacco in 2021 were 0.89 million tonnes of CO2 equivalents (MtCO2eq), a decrease of 7.4% from 2020. The company aims to achieve carbon-neutral operations (Scope 1 and 2 CO2eq emissions) by 2030 and net zero emissions across its value chain by 2050. It also has set a goal to have 100% renewable electricity sourced by 2030.

GHG emissions are generally classified into Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions. Scope 1 includes direct GHG emissions from the combustion of fuels at the company’s owned and operated facilities. Scope 2 encompasses indirect GHG emissions associated with purchased electricity, heat, and steam. Scope 3 involves indirect GHG emissions in the company’s upstream and downstream activities.

Scope 3 emissions form the major portion of British American Tobacco’s total GHG emissions, accounting for around 44.3% (0.39 MtCO2eq) of total GHG emissions in 2021. British American Tobacco’s Scope 1 emissions have decreased by 5% to 0.33 MtCO2eq, and Scope 2 emissions decreased by around 14.6% to 0.17 MtCO2eq in 2021.
