The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the global production and service sectors. The public health system in manycountriescollapsed, and healthcare professionals could neithercomprehend nor respond to the national medical emergency. With the onset of the pandemic, World Health Organization (WHO) collaborated with various countries to develop effective vaccinations to prevent the increase inCOVID-19 cases. Public health bodies developed vaccines to protect people, but the virus constantly mutated itself, resulting in new threats emerging at regular intervals.
Canada commenced the vaccination drive on December 14,2020, with Pfizer’s vaccine for COVID-19. Older people and frontline workers were among the first to receive the vaccine. In Canada, Gisele Levesque, 89, a resident of the Saint-Antoine nursing home in Quebec City, was the first healthcare professional to receive the vaccine. Canada was one of the first countries alongwith the US and the UK to vaccinateits population. The country also began using vaccines from Moderna in mid-December 2020.The government later started using various vaccines such as Moderna Spikevax, vaccine from Janssen, and Novavax Nuvaxovid. Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine was discontinued early in Canada because of blood clot formation. In May 2021, Canada was the first country to approve Pfizer’s vaccine for children aged 12 to 15. As of June 9, 2022, Canada administered 85,799,572 doses of vaccine to its population.
Over time, it was realized that a few people started developing side-effects due to the vaccines. In such cases, people were advised to contact their doctor immediately. But a majority of the people who received the vaccine were reported to have redness and swelling at the injection site. The majority of the vaccinated people reportedchills, fatigue, joint pain, headache, and mild fever.
