Salobo Mine in Para, was the largest copper-producing mine in Brazil, producing approximately 191.7 thousand tonnes of copper and an estimated 46.8 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Salobo Mine is owned by Vale SA, and is due to operate until 2053. The second largest copper-producing mine with an estimated copper production of 86 thousand tonnes and an estimated 11.72 mmtpa of ROM, was the Sossego Mine located in Para. The Sossego Mine is owned by Vale SA, and is due to operate until 2028.
Chapada Mine located in Goias was the third-largest mine, the R22W Mine located in Bahia was the fourth-largest mine, and the Vermelhos Mine located in Bahia was the fifth-largest mine, with a total copper production of 49.5 thousand tonnes, 47.6 thousand tonnes and 28.5 thousand tonnes, respectively, in 2021. The Chapada Mine, the R22W Mine and the Vermelhos Mine had an estimated ROM production of 37.29 mmtpa, 4.8 mmtpa and 0.55 mmtpa respectively. The Chapada Mine is owned by Lundin Mining Corp which is due to operate until 2050, the R22W Mine is owned by Ero Copper Corp and the Vermelhos Mine is owned by Ero Copper Corp which is due to operate until 2026.
The five largest copper mines, i.e., Salobo Mine, Sossego Mine, Chapada Mine, R22W Mine, and Vermelhos Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 403.3 thousand tonnes of copper, 101.18 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
