Global : Five Largest Coal Mines in 2021

  • North Antelope Rochelle Mine in Wyoming, United States, was the largest coal-producing mine in the world, producing approximately 57 million tonnes of coal and an estimated 76.51 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The North Antelope Rochelle Mine is owned by Peabody Energy Corp, and is due to operate until 2047. The second largest coal-producing mine with an estimated coal production of 51.1 million tonnes and an estimated 67.3 mmtpa of ROM, was the Black Thunder Mine located in Wyoming, United States. The Black Thunder Mine is owned by Arch Resources Inc.

  • Sangatta Mine located in East Kalimantan, Indonesia was the third-largest mine, the Gevra OC Mine located in Chhattisgarh, India was the fourth-largest mine, and the Bogatyr Komir Mine located in Pavlodar, Kazakhstan was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated coal production of 49.2 million tonnes, 47.1 million tonnes and 44.6 million tonnes, respectively, in 2021. The Sangatta Mine, the Gevra OC Mine and the Bogatyr Komir Mine had an estimated ROM production of 51.4 mmtpa, 49.04 mmtpa and 55.95 mmtpa respectively. The Sangatta Mine is owned by PT Bumi Resources Tbk, the Gevra OC Mine is owned by Coal India Ltd which is due to operate until 2028 and the Bogatyr Komir Mine is owned by Samruk-Energy.

  • The five largest coal mines, i.e., North Antelope Rochelle Mine, Black Thunder Mine, Sangatta Mine, Gevra OC Mine, and Bogatyr Komir Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 249 million tonnes of coal, 300.20 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
